How to make a UPI QR code for your shop counter
By Jessopradesh John Rose, Founder, QR Studio · Updated November 2026
A UPI QR code at the counter lets customers pay with any UPI app without typing your details. It takes a few minutes and costs nothing. This guide covers making it, printing it, testing it and keeping your customers safe.
Step 1: find your UPI ID
Open your bank or UPI app and look for your UPI ID, also called a VPA. It looks like name@bank. Use the one linked to the account where you want the money.
Step 2: make the code
On the UPI QR code page, enter your UPI ID and your shop name. Leave the amount empty so customers type their own. The code is made in your browser and your details are not uploaded.
Step 3: print it on a counter poster
Use the UPI payment poster template (A5) and add your shop name and UPI ID as text under the code, so people can also pay by typing it if the scan fails. Print on matt paper if your shop has bright lights, because gloss can reflect.
Step 4: test before you put it out
Scan the printed code with a different phone and pay yourself a small amount. Check that your shop name appears on the payment screen and that the money arrives in the right account.
Keeping customers and yourself safe
A UPI QR code is for receiving payments. Remember these rules and tell your staff:
- You never need to enter a UPI PIN to receive money. If anyone asks you to scan a code or enter a PIN to receive a refund or a prize, it is a scam.
- Keep the printed code where you can see it, and check it has not been covered by another sticker.
- Check your bank app for the credit before you hand over goods for a large amount.
